About Daman & Diu

Smart City Dadra & Nagar Haveli

Silvassa is situated along the northern bank of Daman Ganga river and is the capital city of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The city has a population of ~1 lakh people and the Union Territory has a population of ~3.5 lakh which has grown at the fastest growth rate of over 55% based on decennial growth rate. The city also witnesses a major influx of transient population due to industrial and tourism activities. The city is developing into a major industrial hub with textiles, plastics, FMCG, chemicals, heavy engineering and many other industries.

The city is also known for its lush green surroundings and natural beauty with a multitude of tourist spots such as gardens, parks, lakes located both inside and in outskirts of the city. The city is also famous for Swaminarayan Temple on the banks of river Daman Ganga. This has given boost to the hospitality industry with several resorts, hotels, restaurants and allied businesses in the city.

In July 2014, Government of India formally announced the Smart City Scheme to build 100 smart cities across India. An April 2015 announcement detailed the selection process of cities based on a Smart Cities Challenge Competition process. Silvassa has been nominated from Dadra and Nagar Haveli to participate in this Challenge. The development and integration of smart initiatives in the city would be funded by the central and state government, along with locally generated funds.

The top 20 cities would be short-listed from amongst the 100 cities for implementation in the first year. This challenge holds great promise for the Silvassa and all the key officials are working hard towards the selection of Silvassa as a top Smart City.

Feedback Infra (P) Limited in association with Buro Happold Engineers India and CISCO Systems India has been appointed as consultants for supporting and assisting Silvassa Municipal Council in participating in the Challenge, by preparing the Smart City Proposal, addressing a spectrum of citizen needs and providing strategic plans for the development of Silvassa Smart City

Over the next few days, Silvassa Municipal Council would be involved in active consultation with citizens and all key stakeholders to understand their various concerns, collect suggestions and ideas for implementation, and identify smart solutions and their implementation strategy. This would include various contests, events, meetings for public interactions and participation to help Silvassa prepare its bid for the Smart City challenge. We sincerely hope for a healthy participation and support from all the citizens to support Silvassa in its journey towards becoming a Smart City.

There is no universally accepted definition of a smart city. It means different things to different people. The conceptualisation of Smart City, therefore, varies from city to city and country to country, depending on the level of development, willingness to change and reform, resources and aspirations of the city residents. To provide for the aspirations and needs of the citizens, urban planners ideally aim at developing the entire urban eco-system, which is represented by the four pillars of comprehensive development-institutional, physical, social and economic infrastructure

In the approach of the Smart Cities Mission, the objective is to promote cities that provide core infrastructure and give a decent quality of life to its citizens, a clean and sustainable environment and application of ‘Smart’ Solutions. The focus is on sustainable and inclusive development and the idea is to look at compact areas, create a replicable model which will act like a light house to other aspiring cities.
